# System Requirements

> Minimum specs for running Scout on Windows and macOS.

## Supported platforms

| Platform | Minimum version     | Architecture                  |
| -------- | ------------------- | ----------------------------- |
| Windows  | Windows 10+         | x86\_64                       |
| macOS    | macOS 11+ (Big Sur) | Apple Silicon (M1+) and Intel |

<Note>
  Linux support is planned for a future release.
</Note>

## Hardware

| Resource   | Requirement                                                                                            |
| ---------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| Microphone | Built-in or external. USB or 3.5mm recommended over Bluetooth — see [Audio Settings](/settings/audio). |
| Internet | Required for speech-to-text streaming. A stable connection with low latency gives the best results. |

## Permissions

* **Windows:** Microphone access — required for capturing audio.
* **macOS:** Microphone access — required for capturing audio. Accessibility — required for text injection and hotkey detection. Scout can't type into apps without this.

See [Permissions troubleshooting](/troubleshooting/permissions) if you need help granting these.

## Network

Scout streams audio to the speech engine over an encrypted connection. Outbound HTTPS is also required for authentication, billing, and dictionary sync. No special firewall rules are needed beyond standard web traffic on port 443.
