Scout needs system permissions to capture audio and inject text. If something isn’t working, permissions are the most common cause.
macOS requires two permissions: Microphone and Accessibility.

Microphone

1

Open System Settings

Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone.
2

Find Scout

Look for Scout or Scout Voice in the list.
3

Enable the toggle

Turn the toggle on. If Scout isn’t listed, launch Scout — it will prompt you to grant access.

Accessibility

Accessibility permission lets Scout simulate keystrokes to paste text into apps and detect hotkey presses (including the Fn key).
1

Open System Settings

Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility.
2

Find Scout

Look for Scout or Scout Voice in the list.
3

Enable the toggle

Turn the toggle on. If Scout isn’t listed, click the + button, navigate to your Applications folder, and add Scout.
After macOS updates or app reinstalls, Accessibility permission may stop working even though the toggle appears enabled. To fix this, toggle Scout off then on again in Accessibility settings, then relaunch Scout.

Reset Accessibility permission (last resort)

If toggling off/on doesn’t fix Accessibility, you can reset the permission entirely:
  1. Open Terminal
  2. Run: tccutil reset Accessibility ai.scoutvoice.app
  3. Relaunch Scout — it will prompt for Accessibility again
  4. Grant permission and restart Scout
This resets only Scout’s Accessibility permission, not other apps.
